Features of mechanical keys The most common element of the thermal sensor is the bimetallic strip, which works on the principle of thermal expansion. Bimetallic strips are made of two dissimilar metals (which have different thermal expansion rates) and bonded together. Switch contacts operate when temperature causes the tape to bend or twist. Another way the temperature switch works is to use a mercury glass tube. When the bulb heats up, the mercury in the tube expands and then creates pressure to operate the contacts. Other examples include push buttons, flow, push buttons, etc.
